For Love of Our Country

His presence alone makes you proud to be an American. Decorated in full uniform, his smile is ever so charming, and his love for his country, admirable. It takes courage, bravery and dedication to serve your country, and Colonel Joseph McDivitt did it well. The 94-year-old Canyon Country resident and United States Army veteran saved lives…many of them. I even got a little wink out of the colonel, who saved a town from being attacked by the Germans at the Swiss Italian border. What an amazing life lived, what an amazing story to tell.

Hard work, dedication and talent have recently landed the coveted and much sought after winged statuette in the hands of Santa Clarita resident and sound engineer Larold Rebhun. And the Emmy for Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Miniseries or Movie in 2011 goes to The Kennedys. “I couldn’t believe it,” stated Larold. “I didn’t think they would call our name, but they did. It was very emotional!”

Giving Back One Village at a Time

“I believe if the Lord has blessed you, you need to bless others. You need to give back. It’s just that simple.” And that simple idea has changed lives abroad. There are now desks and chairs in the schools, young girls in Kenya who no longer have to walk miles a day to haul water home, and for some villages, there is access to safe drinking water. “I did what I had to do,” states Debra.
Born and raised in Kenya, CEO and Founder of Helping Hands International Foundation, Debra Akello, has set out on a mission…a mission to help…a mission to give back. “I started the Foundation in 2008,” states Debra. “After the mayhem in Kenya that year, I asked myself ‘What can I do to help?’” A Critical Care Nurse at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Debra and a team of doctors and nurses headed to Kenya to help.

From Fighting the Flames to Helping Others

Firefighters. While they may not grace the newspapers or magazines as often as the celebrities and sports icons do, we certainly understand that true heroes aren’t necessarily the homerun hitters or the moviemakers, but rather the ones who climb the long ladders with their water hoses to battle the fierce blazes or provide care for those who are injured. They are the first responders during dangerous times, the ones we call on for help. On duty, they work tirelessly, often in hazardous conditions, working long irregular hours to be there for those in need.
